Client Accountant — Qualified Accountant (UK Experience)
Aster & Trujillo — Málaga, Spain
Full-time, permanent | Immediate start
About the firm
Aster & Trujillo provides UK and cross-border tax, legal and accountancy services to private clients, owner-managed businesses and international groups. Founded by Spanish professionals, the firm has built its reputation on the UK–Spain corridor, advising British nationals with interests in Spain and Spanish and European businesses establishing or operating in the United Kingdom.
As we continue to develop our Málaga office, we are seeking a qualified accountant with substantial UK accountancy practice experience to join our team. Based in Málaga, the successful candidate will work closely with our London practice and our two other senior accountants, helping to maintain the quality and timely delivery of UK client work.
We are a close-knit, partner-led firm offering genuine responsibility, direct access to the Directors and the opportunity to grow with the practice.
The role
The successful candidate will manage their own portfolio of UK clients while working closely with our existing accountants. Alongside our senior colleagues, they will help supervise team members, review work and coordinate priorities across the accountancy practice.
Principal responsibilities include:
- Managing a portfolio of clients and acting as their principal point of contact.
- Working alongside our two other senior accountants to supervise the accountancy team, allocate work and monitor deadlines.
- Supporting colleagues with technical queries and reviewing work to maintain the firm’s standards.
- Overseeing bookkeeping and maintaining client ledgers using Xero, QuickBooks and comparable platforms.
- Preparing and submitting UK VAT returns under Making Tax Digital.
- Preparing bank reconciliations, management accounts and supporting schedules.
- Preparing UK year-end statutory accounts and corporation tax computations for review.
- Liaising with HMRC and Companies House on client matters.
- Ensuring statutory deadlines are met and client files are maintained accurately.
- Directing and reviewing the work of assigned administrative support.
- Collaborating with colleagues across our Málaga and London offices.
The candidate
We are looking for an accountant who offers:
- A recognised accountancy qualification, such as ACA, ACCA or an equivalent professional qualification.
- At least four to five years’ experience in UK accountancy practice, including responsibility for managing multiple clients.
- The ability to manage a client portfolio independently while working collaboratively with senior colleagues.
- Experience in supervising colleagues and reviewing their work.
- Excellent written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate confidently and professionally with UK clients.
- Sound working knowledge of UK VAT, PAYE and corporation tax compliance.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage competing statutory deadlines.
- Proficiency in Spanish would be a distinct advantage. Portuguese, Italian, French or German would also be advantageous given our international client base.
UK accountancy practice experience is essential, as the role will primarily involve supporting UK clients from our Málaga office.
Working arrangements and benefits
The role is based at our Málaga office, working closely with colleagues in London.
We offer:
- A competitive salary, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
- Responsibility for an established client portfolio, with opportunities to develop it further.
- The opportunity to work alongside two other senior accountants and contribute to the supervision and development of the team.
- Dedicated administrative support, depending on experience and seniority.
- Exposure to cross-border advisory work across the UK and Spain.
- The opportunity to take a significant role within a growing international boutique firm.
