Madrid | Social – Wine tasting with British Spanish Society
Descripción del evento
Of the many links that bind Spain and the United Kingdom, few are as fascinating, storied – and delicious – as the history of sherry. The wines from Jerez entered the international stage in 1517, when the Duke of Medina Sidonia, the feudal owner of much of the land around the small port of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, offered English merchants preferential status, gave them eight houses in his town, the right to bear arms day or night and the land on which to build their own church, dedicated to St George. It was a golden moment. Henry VIII was married to Catherine of Aragon and everything, including the wine, was sweetness and sunshine.
Scroll forward to today, and sherry is one of the success stories of the wine world. It has rebuilt its reputation after a few challenging decades to now be one of the most praised and written about wines on earth. Yet, to many consumers, still steeped in the past, it remains a great unknown. The BritishSpanish Society is proud to announce a special tasting of some of the truly outstanding sherries that wine writers and true connoisseurs are marvelling at today.
Please join us on Thursday 9th March at 19.30h to discover what everyone is talking about. We will have a range of sherries you may never have heard about. Experts will guide us through them, offering us deep insights into the history, the present and the future of one of the world’s most famous libations.
As is customary, we will be able to enjoy a delicious buffet after the tasting to compare and contrast our experiences in the convivial and luxurious atmosphere of the British Council’s Edificio Palacete, on P.º del Gral. Martínez Campos, 31.
