The current "la Caixa", la Caja de Ahorros y Pensiones de Barcelona, is the result of the merge in 1990 of "la Caja de Pensiones para la Vejez y de Ahorros de Cataluña y Baleares", founded in 1904, and "la Caja de Ahorros y Monte de Piedad de Barcelona", founded in 1844. Today "la Caixa" is the top savings bank in Spain and the third largest financial group in the country.
