Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

The British Embassy in Spain is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Communications Officer to join its Communications Team, working at the heart of the UK-Spain bilateral relationship and in support of the Embassy’s priorities across its country-wide network. Getting this right has never been more important – given the importance of making a success of the UK’s forthcoming departure from the European Union.

We need a hard-working team player with media handling experience, social media skills and bilingual language ability who can understand and communicate UK government policy on areas such as Europe, and bilateral issues such as trade and investment, and energy and science, as well as providing media support to the network of British Consulates across Spain on issues related to British residents and tourists.

Your work will include handling media enquiries, working with the Embassy’s Political & Economic Section (PES), Consular and Communications colleagues to help develop, distribute and place media content, and developing and implementing other communications activity that supports PES, Prosperity and Consular priorities.

You will be part of the seven-strong Communications Team and act as back-up to the other Communications Officer who leads on compiling the Embassy’s daily press summary and media monitoring, as well as being part of the communications response in case of crisis.

Communications and influencing is a core activity of the Foreign Office, so the Communications Team has an important role within the British Embassy Madrid, which promotes and represents British interests in Spain.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Handle enquiries from, and build and maintain good relations with the Spanish media, UK correspondents in Spain and English-language expatriate media;
  • Handle consular communications in Spain, including prevention campaigns and media interest in high-profile cases;
  • Draft content in Spanish and English for use across communications channels, including print, broadcast and online press, social media, meetings, forums and events;
  • Support Press Officer on the media element of public events and regional trips by the Ambassador and the Deputy Head of Mission;
  • Support in social media monitoring and press handling in crisis situations, including possible deployment on the ground, working outside normal hours as necessary;
  • Evaluate the impact of communications activity around policy and consular issues.

Essential qualifications and experience

  • Experience of media handling and communications delivery, ideally in roles including international relations, politics and economics, or working with the media;
  • Keen interest in UK-Spain relations, UK & SP politics, media and current affairs;
  • Ability to understand policy issues and communicate key messages effectively;
  • Skills to draft communications materials for internal and external use, using native / fluent English and Spanish (Level C1 according to the Common European Framework);
  • Experience in using social media;
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines, with flexibility to respond to changing priorities, and occasionally work out of hours;
  • Willingness to travel within Spain, when required.

Desirable qualifications and experience

  • Communications or International Relations-related degree or other relevant qualification;
  • Awareness of the work of the British Embassy and Consulates across Spain;
  • Experience or good understanding of event delivery and marketing materials.
